Marilyn M. Jones, age 65, passed from this life peacefully in her home during the early morning hours of Tuesday, April 16, 2024, surrounded by loving family members.

A selfless, yet private soul, Marilyn chose not to burden others with knowledge of her condition, she has left many unaware of her 16-month courageous battle against the torment of terminal cancer. Awed by her spirit and tenacity, physicians and other skilled caregivers at various Northwestern University Medical facilities will forever be held in the highest esteem by her surviving spouse, family, and friends.

She was born on October 5th, 1958, in Michigan City, Indiana to the late Gerald Jones and Dolores Starr Jones-Christoph.

On December 27th, 1995, in Clark County, Nevada, Marilyn was wedded to Atley Price after their exclusive commitment to each other for the preceding ten years. Along with Atley, she is survived by her brother Jack (Susan) Jones and niece Jennifer Jones, all of Maryland Heights, Missouri; niece Julienne Jones of Chatham, Illinois; and nephew Lieutenant Jonathon Jones of Corpus Christi, Texas; as well as a panoply of maternal Uncles, Aunts, and cousins residing in the Paw Paw, Michigan environs.

In addition to her parents, Marilyn’s passing was anteceded by brothers John Casey Jones, and Joseph Gerald Jones, half-brothers Gerald Casey Jones and Robert Christoph, Jr, as well as a half-sister Joy Mae Jones-Williams.

In accordance with Marilyn’s wishes, a private inurnment of her cremains will ensue in the near future in the family plot situated at Pine Grove Cemetery in New Buffalo, Michigan, with final arrangements being executed by Ott Haverstock Funeral Chapel. A celebration of Marilyn’s life and essence will be announced in the upcoming late Spring.

A 1976 graduate of New Buffalo High School, Marilyn further earned a degree from Ferris State University in Big Rapids, Michigan in 1979. Immediately thereafter, she became the Official Verbatim Court Reporter in La Porte Superior Court No. 4 until 1983 when she assumed the role of Official Court Reporter for La Porte Superior Court No. 2 for the next 11 years. During those 15 years, she served under presiding judges Keppen, Harner, and King.

In 1995 she left government employment to form the firm of Marilyn M. Jones and Associates, Ltd. Court Reporters and Videographers, which she ran until just days prior to her passing. During her 45-year career, she further earned an associate degree as a paralegal from Indiana University South Bend, achieved licensed certification as a CSR and RPR Court Reporter as well as recognition as a professional videographer. In addition to membership in various national and multiple state court reporting associations, Marilyn was elected and served three terms as President of the Indiana Court Reporters Association. 

Early in her career, Marilyn became one of the first court reporters in northern Indiana to pioneer the use of and become certified in CAT (Computer Aided Transcription). As a result, she was repeatedly called upon to report and transcribe complicated state and federal trials such as capital murder cases which required real-time reporting and daily copy transcription. A sampling of her regular clients included the U.S. Bankruptcy Court, National Transportation Safety Board, Federal Chemical Safety Board, various U.S. Congressional field hearings, as well as numerous municipalities, and corporations in northwest Indiana and southwest Michigan. 

In addition, Marilyn placed under oath and reported testimony by numerous noted individuals such as Donald Trump, Muhammed Ali, Congressmen, and famous performing artists.

The service she was most humbled by, and proud to often offer, was the pro bono stenography and transcription service for aging military veterans from both World Wars. Her work product will forever memorialize the sacrifice and contributions of those patriots for a multitude of family members and veteran organizations.
In her spare time, Marilyn was an accomplished photographer, jewelry designer, and artist/crafter in multiple mediums. She was an ardent line dancer throughout the 80’s and 90’s. She relished the opportunity to transform, by elaborate costume and make-up, into the Purple Good Witch every Halloween for the Washington Park Zoo’s Trick or Treat festivities. By spousal osmosis, she became an avid Purdue football and basketball fanatic, including chauffeuring Coach Gene Keady whenever he came to town. She and Atley traveled extensively, achieving notoriety as having journeyed on every Amtrak route in the country at least once. 

For over 25 years Marilyn and Atley together most enjoyed being Santa and Mrs. Claus for thousands of children in northwest Indiana and southwest Michigan. Most notably, for at least ten years, always made appearances in Michigan City’s Christmas Parade followed by welcoming all believers to the downtown Santa House in the weeks preceding Christmas.

In addition to her husband and immediate family, Marilyn also leaves an unfathomable void in the hearts of special friends Becky Lempa and William Richey, as well as faithful feline companions Jonesy and Gracie.

Gary L. Hampton, 80, from Michigan City, Indiana, passed away on Wednesday, April 17th, 2024, at 8:00 p.m. in the Life Care Center of Michigan City.

A private celebration of his life will be held. The Ott/Haverstock Funeral Chapel, 418 Washington St., Michigan City, IN is handling arrangements.    

He was born on April 3rd, 1944, in New York, New York to the late Guy and Alyce (Kuhnel) Hampton.

Surviving are his daughter, Susan Anderson of Mineral Wells, Texas; and cousin, Marjorie Wozniak of Michigan City, Indiana. 

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Gary was a retired mail carrier for the U.S. Postal Service in Santa Monica, CA. He was a U.S. Army Vietnam veteran, honorably serving his country. Gary was a member of the VFW Post 2536, D.A.V. Danny Bruce Chapter #23, and the Elks Lodge #432.

G. McKee Kirkpatrick, born September 17th, 1938, in Logansport, Indiana, entered eternal life on Sunday, April 14th, 2024, in South Bend, Indiana. He was surrounded by his family.

McKee was an alumnus of Culver Military Academy, Culver Summer Naval School, Culver, IN, (1953 - 1955). While attending Culver Military Academy, he received the Gold Tuxis from the Governor of Indiana. He was a graduate of New Trier High School, Winnetka, IL, class of 1956, and was a member of both the wrestling and football teams. He regaled his family with stories of his numerous misadventures and pranks, while attending New Trier, such as the “unsolved gangland murder at the Teatro Theatre” with limousine, starter pistol, and gangster outfits.

At Dickinson College, Carlisle, PA, class of 1960, he served as President and Vice President of the student body, was a fraternal brother of Phi Kappa Psi, joined the student senate, played football, wrestled, and became an amateur boxer. He furthered his education at the University of Southern California, Los Angeles, CA.

He enlisted in the United States Marine Corps Reserve in 1960 and continued boxing. One of his sparring partners in the Marines was future world heavyweight champion Ken Norton. McKee was honorably discharged from the Marine Corps after a skiing accident in 1963.

McKee met Gloria Jean Brown in Los Angeles, CA, and they married in 1965 after she returned from teaching at the Navy base in Yokohama, Japan.

McKee began his professional life in sales within the staffing industry in Los Angeles, CA, and later Detroit, MI, with Kelly Girl Service, Inc. (later Kelly Services, Inc.). With a number of friends in real estate, he segued from the staffing business into the commercial real estate industry in 1969 as a leasing broker, joining Arthur Rubloff & Co., Chicago, IL, (his first-year volume exceeded the firm’s history); IDC Real Estate, Chicago, IL, office leasing broker and equity partner, he achieved the highest commission volume for the firm in his second year, then at Draper and Kramer, Incorporated, Chicago, IL, as Vice President of corporate development, he reorganized the office properties management and leasing departments and participated in the development of the 33 West Monroe Building. As Chairman of Chicago Charter, Inc., Chicago, IL, he directed the redevelopment and leasing of 165 North Canal Street. Relocating to Colorado, he was Managing Broker at LaSalle Partners Incorporated, Denver, CO, and Executive Vice President at Realties, Inc., involved with the leasing and management of first-class office facilities, specializing in the redevelopment of “lower-downtown” Denver. He contributed articles to a number of real estate and civic publications and was interviewed in capacities involving both real estate and commercial contracting. McKee later moved into the commercial contract cleaning industry with North American Maintenance, Inc., Denver, CO, Chairman/Owner, expanding operations into Dallas, Houston, Los Angeles, San Diego, Las Vegas, Washington, D.C, and Chicago; Chicago Building Services, Inc., Chicago, IL, Founder, Chairman/Owner; and Kimco Corporation, Chicago, IL, and Detroit, MI, Director.

Fraternal memberships included the American Legion, Marine Corps League, and the Ancient Order of Hibernians.

Over the years, he held memberships at the Union League Club of Chicago, Michigan Shores Club in Wilmette, IL, the Denver Athletic Club, the Chicago Athletic Association, and the Metropolitan Club, Chicago.

He enjoyed John Wayne movies, taking his family to the theater (especially fond of musicals), Irish folk music (the Dubliners, the Chieftains, and the Wolfe Tones to name a few), Bill Haley and the Comets (and many others), gatherings with friends (notably the local pub), discussing history, playing the cornet, Northwestern and Notre Dame football games, Irish Wolfhounds, and working. He was referred to by his friends as “Mac” or “Big Mac.”

McKee was preceded in death by his parents, Francis McKee and Kathryn Alice Kirkpatrick, and his sister Josephine Merrill Kirkpatrick. McKee leaves behind his wife of 58 years, Gloria Jean, his daughters Kathryn Josephine and Mary Frances, sons Brian Keith and Sean Casey (Amanda), granddaughter Riley Lynn, grandsons Conor McKee and Peter Ivan, brother-in-law Don Brown, and many cousins. He has joined his sons Christopher McKee and Colin Flinn in the hereafter. McKee will be deeply missed by everyone who knew him.

McKee was TRULY ONE OF A KIND, with a larger-than-life personality, charm, and a great sense of humor. He made an impression on everyone who met him. He is referred to as a Renaissance Man by his wife, Gloria.

To honor and respect McKee’s written instructions, a funeral ceremony will not be held; however, the family will host a celebration of McKee’s life for family and friends at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to a preferred charity of choice.

Larry Eugene Eveland died on April 17th, 2024, in Valparaiso, Indiana at age 88. 

Larry was born on January 11th, 1936, in Elkhart, Indiana to Harold and Joyce Eveland. He had one sister, Saunie Brown. Larry was an entrepreneur businessman. 

On June 22nd, 1968, Larry married Judith (Summers) Eveland at the First United Methodist Church in Marquette, Michigan. They shared 55 years of life and love until Judy’s death on August 13th, 2023.

Larry appreciated classic cars, from Model Ts to his old station wagon. He was a small-engine airplane pilot and enjoyed reading, but those things were just hobbies. The things that he loved were not things. Larry loved his wife, Judy, and his children. He loved his grandchildren, who brought him great joy. Larry loved Judy’s cooking, and he loved complaining about every meal that was served to him at a restaurant. 

He had a strong, independent spirit and a generous heart, for which he will be greatly missed.

Larry is preceded in death by his wife Judith, parents Harold and Joyce, sister Saunie Brown, and grandson Dustin.

Larry is survived by his son Charlie Harper in Fargo, ND; daughters Char (Mark) Ellinwood in Wauseon, OH; Cathy (Robert) Burleson in Bakersville, NC; Sarah (Josh) Elzinga in Wanatah, IN; grandchildren Annabelle, Luci, Sarah Grace, Elisha, Brandon, Megan, Moriah, and Rebecca, eight great-grandchildren, and four nieces and nephews. He is also survived by his lifelong dear friends, Roger and Gail Kneeland and Dick and Nancy Lutey.

In loving memory of Terry Wayne Snyder, Age 80 passed away on Monday, April 8th, 2024, in Sebring, FL.

He was born on December 12th, 1943, in Sullivan, IN, the son of George and Mary (Sullivan) Snyder.

He was a loving husband to Geraldine (Hubner) Snyder and a caring father to Dawn Chlebowski of LaPorte, IN, Laura Stoewer of LaPorte, IN, and Pamela Dickey of Del Ray Beach, FL He was also a grandfather to four grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents and daughter Shannon Snyder.

Terry proudly served his country in the U.S. Army.

He worked for over 30 years for Teledyne Casting in LaPorte, IN, and retired from GenPack in Sebring, FL.

It brought joy to Terry going on cruises with his wife Geri, with whom he shared a bond of deep love and devotion.

May he rest in peace knowing that he was loved and will be deeply missed by Family and friends.

Sigrid "Sig" G. McMahan, 74, of La Porte, Indiana, passed away at 4:20 a.m. on the 20th day of April 2024. She passed at the VNA Hospice Center in Valparaiso.

Sig was born in Hildesheim, Germany on August 4th, 1949, to Fritz and Erna Pinkepank.

On November 1st, 1969, in La Porte, IN, she married Gary McMahan.  Surviving are her children, Derek (Erica) McMahan of Chesterton and Garett (Melissa Rodriguez) McMahan of New York, New York; 3 grandchildren, Regan Krachinski, Addison McMahan and Gunnar McMahan; sisters-in-law, Bonnie (Dennis) Timm and Cindy Scheidel, both of La Porte; brother-in-law, Patrick McMahan of La Porte; and nephews, Jarred Timm, Eric and Brian Scheidel, and Steve McMahan. 

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, brother "Gunner" Friddel H. Gunter, and nephew Ryan Timm.

After graduating from La Porte High School in 1968, Sig received a Stenographic Diploma from the South Bend College of Commerce in June of 1969.  She was inducted into the Alpha Delta Chapter of Alpha Lota Sorority in 1969.  Sig worked as a Teacher's Aide at both Boston Middle School and St. John's Lutheran School. She took great pride in her students as a Teacher's Aide and an even greater pride in her sons. 

Sig loved her dogs (Major, Toby, and Tootsie) and her cats (Miss Kitty, Pretty and Ugly).  She enjoyed watching the Hallmark Channel, going out to the movies, attending concerts, and even recently attending Comic Conventions with her son and grandson. 

Sig's biggest enjoyment and love revolved around her two sons.  She was eager to help with no questions asked.  She helped run her sons to all their sporting events and even helped with acting and theatrical productions. She loved helping her children with their studies by quizzing for tests and helping make 3x5 flashcards.  Her sons were the focus of her life. 

A time of visitation will be held from 4 - 8 p.m. on Friday, April 26th, 2024, and from 10 a.m. until the time of the service on Saturday at the funeral home.

A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, April 27th, 2024, at Cutler Funeral Home and Cremation Center, 2900 Monroe St., La Porte, IN  46350 with Chaplain David Tate officiating.  Cremation will take place following the service with a private family burial at Pine Lake Cemetery at a later date.

Robert Eugene Carpenter went to be with Jesus while he slept peacefully on the morning of April 20th, 2024, in his home in LaPorte, Indiana. Bob was 79.

He was born in 1945 in Owosso, Michigan. Remaining are his wife Dianne, three children, seven grandchildren, and a great-grandson.

They married 57 years ago just before he graduated with honors from Michigan State University with a bachelor’s in civil engineering. His career was in construction. For almost two decades he was president of Gibson-Lewis, Mishawaka, Indiana, a commercial contractor. Bob was a builder and woodworker.

He and Dianne dreamed of building a house together from the time of their engagement. He retired at age 59 in 2004 to give his full attention to personally constructing a dream house on his rural property. He enjoyed mentoring young men in constructing his house.

He was in charge of the renovation of two commercial properties to become church buildings for the churches he belonged to. He gave countless hours to these projects, as well as to the restoration of the County Barn next to the County Home, the construction of the Rumely Allis-Chalmers LaPorte Heritage Center, and friends’ home projects.

He and his wife were membership chairmen of the Sunday Farmers for a dozen years. He’s been a member of State Street Community Church since 2010.

He was industrious, faithful, selfless, quiet, and gentle. He cared deeply about the legacy of the Founding Fathers and our Pilgrim Fathers, from whom he and his wife were descended. He was a devoted father and Christian who loved and was loved by his family.

Visitation will be on Wednesday, April 24th, from 4-7 pm and on the day of the funeral from 10-11 am at Frank L. Keszei Funeral Home, Essling Chapel, 1117 Indiana Avenue, La Porte, Indiana.

A public funeral will begin at 11 on Thursday, also at Essling Chapel.

Pamela J. "Pam" Steck, 73, of La Porte, IN, passed away on Wednesday, April 17th, 2024, at University of Chicago Medical Center. 

Pamela was born to Brenton and Jean (Larson) Steck, Sr. on May 30th, 1950, in La Porte, IN, and lived here her entire life in the community she loved.

Surviving are her sister, Michele (Bob) Ryan of Marion, IA; brothers, Brenton Steck, Jr. and Charles (Mary) Steck, both of La Porte; 5 nieces and nephews, Laura (John) Stewart-Smith, Ryan (Denise) Stewart, Tiffany (Austin) Ryan-Hermsen, Andrew (Mackenzie) Steck, and Mattie Steck; as well as 8 great-nieces and great-nephews.

Pam was preceded in death by her parents and siblings, James Steck and Kandace Rice.

Pam graduated from La Porte High School in 1968.  She obtained B.S. and M.S. degrees in Elementary Education from Purdue Northwest.  Early in her career, she worked as a preschool teacher at Kiddie College. An award-winning master teacher, Pam retired from a wonderful 40-year career teaching 2nd grade at Riley Elementary School.

During her career, she welcomed many high school interns and collegiate student teachers into her classroom and provided a nurturing environment in guiding them toward becoming teachers in their own right.  She set high standards for teaching and was remembered by so many, both students and fellow teachers.  

Pam was a member of the D.A.R., Phi Delta Kappa, and Michigan City Senior Center where she enjoyed great friendship while playing Mexican train, dominoes, and euchre.  

Pam loved to travel, both with friends and family.  She enjoyed many trips throughout the United States, traveling by plane, planned bus trips, as well as family driving excursions.  

She was passionate about her outdoor flowers and loved tending to all her pots and flower beds.  Pam was also very creative, excelling at different crafts such as basket weaving, ceramics, needlework, and more.  A very special thing for Pam was her love of recipes and recipe books and putting them to use in baking.  Many family members and friends were recipients of her great baking endeavors.

Pam loved all music genres and spent several years singing with the Bethany Church Choir.  She was a longtime regular attendee of the La Porte City Band as well as the La Porte County Symphony Orchestra.  For many years, she and our mother could be seen in their usual seats at these events.   

In our family, Pam was the aunt, "Aunt Pammy", who spoiled all the kids in the next generation, loving them all!  As the family foodie, Pam made sure family members had their own favorite foods at family events.  She also was the caregiver to our mother, especially keeping her safe during the challenging times of COVID-19.  To us, as her siblings, she will always be Pam, our beautiful and loving sister, always there with us. 

Cremation has taken place with Cutler Funeral Home and Cremation Center, La Porte.

A Celebration of Life Gathering will be held from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, May 18th, 2024, at Cutler Funeral Home and Cremation Center.  A private family graveside service will follow.

Suzanne Locke, 84, of La Porte, Indiana passed away peacefully on April 17th, 2024.

She was born on September 7th, 1939, to Steven and Mary (Hrasko) Sandor. Suzanne was a graduate of San Pierre High School in North Judson, where she formed many lifelong friendships that she treasured dearly.

On September 7th, 1958, she married Donald E. Locke with whom she shared a beautiful life. Together they were the loving parents of two children, Joseph (Lisa) Locke of Macy, Indiana, and Jeanein Locke of La Porte. Suzanne worked as an Administrative Secretary for the La Porte County Health Department and then went on to work at La Porte County Juvenile Services from which she retired.

Her passions were horseback riding, antiquing, and taking care of her family.

Suzanne was blessed with seven grandchildren, grandson, Erik Netzer of Walkerton, granson, Ryan (Brittany Netzer of Walkerton, granddaughter, Becca (Matt) Ballman of Michigan City, granddaughter, Heather Locke of Michigan City, granddaughter, Hannah (James) Morton of Westville, granddaughter, Jesse Greene of Peru, grandson, D.J. Greene of Peru.

Suzanne felt extremely blessed to have seven great-grandchildren, Rhett, Hazel, Alivia, Lily, Sammi, Khloe, and Harley. She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Steven (Marion) Sandor; a sister, Mary (Stanley) Jarosinski. A brother, Robert (Barb) Sandor remains.

Private family services will take place with burial at Winamac Cemetery, where she will be laid to rest next to her husband, Donald.

Robert J. "Bob" Kendick, a cherished member of the Saugany Lake community and a beacon of courage and friendliness, passed away peacefully on April 16th, 2024, at the age of 91.

Born on June 26th, 1932, in Gary, Indiana, to the late Joseph and Mary (Kallok) Kendick, Bob was a man who lived a life marked by dedication, service, and warmth.

Bob's early years in Gary laid a strong foundation for a life of commitment and hard work. After bravely serving his country in the U.S. Army during the Korean War, he returned home to embark on a successful career.

Bob retired as a Sales Manager from Sears-Roebuck Company after 30 years of dedicated service, where he was known for his exceptional leadership and ability to connect with both colleagues and customers. His retirement was anything but idle, as Bob continued to contribute to his community in La Porte, Indiana.

He was a familiar face at the La Porte Hospital, where he volunteered with the Auxiliary for over 25 years, offering comfort and assistance to patients and staff alike. Bob also enjoyed the camaraderie and competition found in the local bowling leagues, where he was a regular participant and a friendly competitor. Bob's life was one of connection and engagement. He was a man who not only served his country and his community but also cherished the bonds of family.

Though predeceased by his parents, Joseph and Mary Kendick, and his sister, Joan Chionis, his brother-in-law, John, and his nephew, John Chionis, Bob's legacy lives on through his beloved niece, his four nephews, his grand-nieces, his grand-nephews, his great-nephew and his great-niece, his dear friends, and the many lives he touched. His absence will be deeply felt by all who knew him.

Susan Diane Vaughn, age 74 passed away at her LaPorte, IN home on January 29th, 2024. 

Susan was born on May 25th, 1949, in Gary, Indiana. She grew up alongside her three siblings and attended Lew Wallace High School where she graduated in 1967. She worked in Sheet & Tin at US Steel in Gary. She enjoyed photography, caring for her beloved pets, and researching her family’s ancestry.

She was preceded in death by her parents Delma and Kenneth Vaughn, sister Ronda Patterson, brother-in-law Howard Eastwood, and nephew Howard Eastwood Jr. 

She is survived by her sister, Kay Eastwood, and brother, Larry Vaughn, and many dear cousins, nephews, and nieces.

John F. Baird, Jr., 89, Michigan City, Indiana, passed away Tuesday, April 16th, 2024, at 8:16 am in Franciscan Health - Michigan City.

He was born May 4th, 1934, in Bremen, IN to the late John and Dorothea (Bowlby) Baird, Sr. On July 24th, 1954, in Valparaiso, IN he married Patricia Petralias Baird who preceded him on June 3rd, 2022.

Surviving are two daughters, Deborah Baird and Judy (Charles) Feldhaus both of Michigan City, IN; a grandchild, Marcy Tanski; and a great-grandchild, Josephine Bourn.

He was also preceded in death by his daughter, Carol Baird; grandchild, Matthew  Tanski; and sister, Rosemary Hartman.

John retired after 32 years as an electrical maintenance supervisor at Bethlehem Steel and was a U.S. Army Veteran. He was a graduate of Valparaiso Technical Institute and a member of the Michigan City Senior Center. John enjoyed camping, Caribbean cruises, and spending the winters in Florida.

Michael A. Lombard, 68, Michigan City, Indiana, passed away Tuesday, April 16th, 2024, at 8:00 pm in his home.

A private celebration of life will be held for immediate family. Ott/Haverstock Funeral Chapel, Michigan City, IN is handling arrangements.

He was born September 27th, 1955, in La Porte, IN to the late Russell and Esther (Freeland) Lombard.

Surviving are two daughters, Angela (Eric) Spurr of Chesterton, IN, and Jaime Lombard of La Porte, IN; four grandchildren, Zachary Taylor, Jocelyn (Nate) Michael, Tyla Gross, and Kavan Lombard; two sisters, Linda (Wayne) Hardesty of Michigan City, IN and Carol Leathem of La Porte, IN; and his companion, Kim Gamez of Michigan.

He was also preceded in death by his sister, Vicki (Doug)Ashmore.

Michael had worked as a heavy equipment operator. He enjoyed watching TV, sports, driving his Camaro, love of the unknown, and spending time with family and friends.

Robert "Bob" Lee Lower, 83, beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend, of La Porte, Indiana, passed away on April 17th, 2024 at his home, surrounded by his loving family.

Bob was born on November 28th, 1940, in La Porte, IN, to Austin and Asenath (Wood) Lower.

On July 28th, 1959, in La Porte, IN, he married the love of his life, Vira Brown, who survives.  Also surviving are his 3 children, Michael Lower of La Porte, Sherry (Tom) Curtis of Union Mills, and Francine (Doug) Bottorf of Mansfield, OH; many cherished grandchildren and great-grandchildren; sister, Sherry (William) Anderson; beloved dog, Sophie; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Richard Lower; and grandson, Zachary Byers.

Bob proudly served in the United States Air Force.

Bob worked many years as a truck driver, which he dearly loved. To him, truck driving was so much more than a job.  He was truly passionate about it.  Bob held his CDL until 81 years of age.  He took great pride and integrity in his work, which was meticulous.  Bob instilled in his family the importance of pride, integrity, and honesty in all work completed.

He was a devoted family man, who loved and cherished his wife.  Bob would often say that Vira was #1 and the love of his life.  He would always put her needs before his own.

In addition to his commitment to Vira, Bob unconditionally loved his children, even through their "not-so-good" decisions.  Michael, Sherry, and Fran knew that they could count on him for great advice and honesty.  Bob was always willing to talk to his children about anything, at any time.

Bob's generosity didn't end with his family.  He would freely give of his time and talents to help others, without asking anything in return. 

Bob will be fondly remembered for his great sense of humor, which he displayed until the very end of his life.  His children will remember him as the strongest man and "not a quitter".

"All good things take time" and "It is what it is till it changes" are Bob's infamous quotes that his family will always hold dear.

A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 1 p.m. on Monday, April 22nd, 2024, at Christ Gospel Church with Pastor Ricky Bray officiating. Burial with military honors will follow at Patton Cemetery.

A time of visitation will be held from 11 a.m. until the time of the service on Monday at the church.

Dylan Robert Andersen, 27, from Michigan City, Indiana, passed away unexpectedly on Monday, April 8th, 2024.

Funeral services will be held at 4:00 p.m., Saturday, April 20th, 2024, at the Ott/Haverstock Funeral Chapel, 418 Washington St., Michigan City, Indiana. Visitation will be held from 12:00 p.m. until the time of service Saturday at the funeral chapel.

He was born on May 16th, 1996, in Hobart, Indiana, to Robert Michael and Michele Elaine (Flores) Andersen.

Surviving are his parents, Robert and Michele Andersen of Michigan City; two sisters, Katelyn (Tony) Lesjak of Demotte, Indiana and Alexis (Payten) Schofield of Las Vegas, Nevada; maternal grandparents, Pamela and Robert Flores of Michigan City, Indiana; paternal grandmother, Alice Lambert of Peoria, Arizona; paternal grandparents, Allan (Cindi) Andersen of La Porte, Indiana; four nieces, Lilli, Gianna, and Giselle Lesjak, and Avery Schofield; aunt and cousin, Veronica Flores and Roman Petrie of Michigan City, Indiana. 

Dylan was a shift manager at Hearthside Food Solutions, Michigan City.

Edgar Adrian Osornio, 24, of Kingsbury, IN, passed away on April 16th, 2024, at Riley Hospital for Children, after a valiant fight against cancer.

Edgar was born on April 22nd, 1999, in La Porte, IN, to Baltazar and Esther (Medina) Osornio.

On April 12th, 2024, in Indianapolis, he married Mackenzie Roberts, who survives. Also surviving are his parents, Baltazar and Esther Osornio; brother, Sergio Osornio; sister-in-law, Shannon Thompson; niece, Autumn Osornio; nephews, Aisaia and Adrien Osornio; grandmother, Beatriz Osornio; and grandfather, Manuel Osornio.

Edgar worked as a landscaper in his family's business, Osornio Gardens.  He enjoyed painting, golfing, and playing video games. 

He will be remembered for being a friend to everyone and fiercely loving his family.  Edgar's greatest memories were with his family, whom he treasured.

Throughout his cancer journey, Edgar fought hard for life, always willing to do anything his medical team asked. Edgar's family is grateful for all the care and love shown to him by his physicians, nurses, and additional medical staff.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, April 20th, 2024, at St. Joseph Catholic Church, La Porte. Burial will follow at Kingsbury Cemetery.

A time of visitation will be held from 5 - 9 p.m. on Friday, April 19th, 2024, at Cutler Funeral Home and Cremation Center and from 11 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. on Saturday, April 20th, 2024, at the funeral home.  At 12:30 p.m. on Saturday, there will be a procession from the funeral home to the church.

Casimir John Baczkiewicz, Jr, 64, of La Porte, Indiana passed away Monday, April 15th, 2024, at Community South Hospital in Indianapolis due to complications of pneumonia. 

Cas was born on February 9th, 1960, to Casimir and Irene (Ziarnek) B?czkiewicz. Cas was the most kind-hearted, brilliantly artistic, and quick-witted son, brother, uncle, and father.

Cas is survived by his stepson, Steven Hyde of Killeen, Texas; sisters, Cindy Dye of Dallas Fort Worth, Texas, Judy (Jim) Kmiec of La Porte, Indiana, Susan (Bill) Kunisch of Prescott Valley, Arizona, and Trish (Chris) Kosakowski of Michigan City, Indiana. Also surviving are several nieces and nephews. Cas was preceded in death by his parents, and second wife, Susan Burkett.

Cas was a proud La Porte High School Slicer (#58) and went on to proudly serve our country in the U.S. Army. Cas was truly a great man whose impact will be forever felt and missed by his friends and family.

Private burial will take place at Pine Lake Cemetery with Military Honors.

Brandon "Batman" Human, a beloved son, brother, and friend, passed away on April 8th, 2024, leaving behind cherished memories and a legacy of love. Born on August 21st, 1997, in La Porte, IN, Brandon was known for his adventurous spirit and passion for the outdoors.

Affectionately nicknamed "Batman," Brandon had a deep love for fishing, camping, and exploring the woods. He found joy in playing basketball, swimming, and bowling – activities that brought him closer to his family and friends. Those who knew him best remember how he always seemed to have critters in his pockets and his contagious laughter that lit up any room.

His favorite holiday was Halloween, a time when his creative spirit shone brightly as he embraced the festivities with enthusiasm. Brandon's hobbies and interests reflected his vibrant personality and his zest for life.

Frank J. Maenza, 52, Michigan City, Indiana, passed away Sunday, April 14th, 2024, at 3:02 pm in Franciscan Health - Michigan City.

He was born May 3rd, 1971, in Newark, NJ. On May 11th, 2013, in Michigan City, IN he married Tina (Dolph) Terry who survives in Michigan City, IN. 

Also surviving are a daughter, Sabrina (Andrew Roberts) Terry of Michigan City, IN; three grandchildren, Farrah Butler, Khloe White and Kai Roberts; his mother, Gina Maenza of Belleville, NJ; sister, Gina (Michael) Pietroni of Belleville, NJ; mother-in-law, Rosa Dolph of Michigan City, IN; sister-in-law, Sally Callahan of Michigan City, IN; and several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his father, Giuseppe Maenza; father-in-law, Jerry Dolph; and brother-in-law, Charles  Callahan.

Frank was a human resource recruiter at the Center for Growth and Independence, Benton Harbor, MI. He enjoyed sports, camping, and being with family.

Lois V. Horvath, a cherished pillar of the La Porte community and a beacon of kindness and adventure, passed away peacefully on April 15th, 2024, at the age of 97. Born on May 9th, 1926, in La Porte, Indiana, to the late Emil and Mildred (Schlaudraff) Fink, Lois's life was a testament to the love and joy she brought to everyone around her.

Lois, a lifelong resident of La Porte, graduated from Mill Creek High School and soon after embarked on a fulfilling career as a secretary with Farm Bureau Insurance, where she dedicated 40 years of exceptional service. Her work ethic and commitment to her colleagues and clients were unparalleled, and she left a lasting impact on all who had the pleasure of working with her.

On July 2nd, 1949, Lois married the love of her life, William Horvath, with whom she shared a beautiful life until his passing on September 11th, 1990. Together, they raised a family grounded in love and mutual respect. Lois is survived by her loving children, Paul W. Horvath, Judy H. Griffin, and Emil J. (Barb) Horvath, all of La Porte. She was a proud grandmother to Jason Horvath, Jennie (Harry) Steinhagen, Cara (Rickie) Jones, Megan Horvath, Sarah (Alex) Milliman, and Crystal Pugh, and a great-grandmother to Mikayla, Victoria, Bryce, and Kierstyn. Her warmth and guidance will live on through them. She is also survived by her niece, Jean Wright. Lois was preceded in death by her siblings, Pauline R. Clingenpeel and Robert Fink.

Lois's involvement in her community was profound and far-reaching. She was a devoted member of the First Christian Church of Rolling Prairie, where she served with the Christian Women's Fellowship and God's Golden Warriors. Her commitment to service extended to the Rolling Prairie Community Center and she was an active participant in the Ladies Auxiliary of the V.F.W. 9423 and the Ladies Auxiliary-American Legion Post 83 of La Porte. Lois also contributed her time and talents to the Women of the Moose Chapter 935 of Michigan City, the Swanson Center, and the Senior Center Recreation Club, both of La Porte.

An adventurous spirit, Lois was known for her love of the outdoors. She was a respected horse and pony leader at the La Porte Fair, sharing her passion and knowledge with the next generation. Lois's zest for life was evident in her hobbies, which included playing bingo, cards, knitting, crocheting, traveling, camping, and dancing. Her ability to light up a room with her presence earned her the affectionate title of a social butterfly.

Those who knew Lois would describe her as not only adventurous but also incredibly kind and friendly. She approached life with an open heart and an infectious enthusiasm that drew people to her. Her legacy of compassion and vivacity will continue to inspire those who were fortunate enough to have known her.

A life so beautifully lived deserves to be beautifully remembered. Lois V. Horvath will be deeply missed, but her spirit will forever remain a guiding light to all who were blessed to be a part of her world.

Michael T. Humphrey, 58, passed away on Sunday, April 14th, 2024, at Brickyard Healthcare-Terrace Care Center.

Michael was born on February 11th, 1966, in La Porte, IN, to George Humphrey, Jr. and Marilyn (Steiner) Tindle.

Surviving Michael are his daughter, Joellan (Lawrence) Wallace; mother, Marilyn Tindle; sisters, Maxi Schultz and Gina Bernacchi; brother, John Humphrey; significant other of over 20 years, Jan Foltz; grandchildren, Kaylee Whiteman, Kinora Wallace, Damarion Whiteman, Kamiyah Wallace, and Kiyah'na Wallace; great-grandchild, Harmony Human; uncle, Stanley Steiner; step-brothers, Lynn (Kim) Tindle and Marty Tindle; as well as many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his father and step-mother, George (Sandy) Humphrey, Jr; brother, George Humphrey, III; uncle, Steve Steiner; step-father, R. T. Tindle; and grandparents, George (Coleen) Humphrey, Sr. and Arlie (Dorothy) Steiner.

Michael worked in construction for many years.  He enjoyed NASCAR, Cubs games, and cooking.

Mrs. Edythe “Sally” Harviel of McCordsville, Indiana, formerly of LaPorte, Indiana departed this life Wednesday, April 10th, 2024. Sally was born November 22nd, 1928, in Anderson, Indiana to the late Clifford J. & Berta C. (Hall) Winehill.

Sally lived in LaPorte most of her life where she worked for over 30 years for the Indiana State Employment Service. On October 31st, 1981, she married Leonard W. Harviel who preceded her in death. Sally also lived in Iowa where she worked for Job Services, The City of Manhattan, Kansas, and retired to Henderson, Nevada. She was a member of numerous clubs and organizations throughout her life including, Beta Sigma Phi Sorority, The Desert Newcomer’s Club, and Retired Officer’s Wives Club.

Sally is survived by her two sons, Michael J. (Karen) Boatright of Hobart, IN and Christopher J. (Christine) Wiencken of Noblesville, IN; one stepson, Leonard W. Harviel Jr. of Copperas Cove, TX; eight grandchildren, twelve great-grandchildren, and several great-great-grandchildren.

Inurnment will be held at Pine Lake Cemetery in LaPorte, Indiana. Memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association or Paradigm Hospice of Indianapolis, IN.

In loving memory of Supar Dapre Hilley, who was taken from us far too soon. Born in South Bend, IN, on April 3th, 2024, Supar brought immense joy into the lives of all who knew him. Tragically, while visiting Michigan City, Supar passed away on April 6th, 2024.

Supar was a delightful baby who captured the hearts of those around him with just a smile. His personality shone through as he enjoyed being held and tickled, cherished his pacifier like any baby would, and peacefully slept through the night. His brief time with us left a lasting impact that will be forever treasured.

Left to cherish his memory are his grieving parents Isiah and Kyrstal, Supar's grandparents Lisa & Patrick Baker, Terrance Hilley & Rebecca Scasny, Bishop & Anakin Hilley; great-grandparent Margaret Halley; great-grandparents Mike & Sue Halley; great great grandma Joann Frechette; as well as Lyle & Deborah Baker and Greg & Wenda Scasny mourn his loss deeply. Wallace "Wally" Lee Gayheart, 80, passed away on Thursday, April 11th, 2024, at Franciscan Health-Michigan City.

Wallace was born on November 1st, 1943, in Handshoe, Kentucky to Lois and Dixie (Bailey) Gayheart.

On August 12,th 1967, in Michigan City, Indiana, he married Beverly White who survives.  Also surviving are his children, Shannon (Jennifer) Gayheart and Kristen (Larry) Joseph, both of La Porte.  

He was preceded in death by his parents.   

Wally proudly served in the US Air Force.  He worked as a retailer manager until he retired. Wally was a member of Phi Delta Kappa, COHO Club, and the American Legion.  He enjoyed fishing and gardening.

Cremation has taken place with Cutler Funeral Home and Cremation Center, La Porte.  A private family graveside service will take place.

The world mourns the loss of a beloved soul, Gloria J. Vance, who departed from this earthly realm on April 9th, 2024. She was a beacon of light to all who had the privilege of knowing her. Born on October 7th, 1949, in La Porte, IN, Gloria brought immense joy and warmth to the lives she touched.

Gloria pursued her passion for nursing and attained an associate’s degree in the field. Her kindness knew no bounds, and her jovial spirit never failed to uplift those around her. Known for her welcoming nature and quick wit, Gloria had a remarkable ability to make everyone feel at ease in her presence.

Her interests were as diverse as they were captivating. A devoted Notre Dame football fan, Gloria's enthusiasm for the sport was infectious. She found solace in the tranquility of fishing and took pride in nurturing her garden, tending to her cherished plants and flowers with love. Among her favorite pastimes were engaging in lively games of UNO and dominos, where she shared laughter and created lasting memories with loved ones.

Gloria's memory will forever be treasured by her surviving family: Laura (Donald) Harshman (daughter), Clifford (Rayna) Vance (son), Randy (Lorraine) Vance (son), Rodney (Lisa) Vance (son), Kevin Vance (son), Brandi (Markus), Clifford III, Floyd III, Christopher (Jenny), Brittany, Brent (Ashley), Krystle, Katie (grandchildren), Aidyn, Ethyn, Deakyn, Carman, Damien, Milay, Peyton, Ella, and Chloe (great-grandchildren). She is preceded in death by her parents Wilmer and Ann Ames and her brother Jim Ames.

A visitation will be held in Gloria's honor on April 15th at Haverstock Funeral Home 602 Maple Ave. La Porte from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM followed by a Funeral Service at 12:00 PM. The burial will take place at Oak Grove Cemetery in Mill Creek at 12:30 PM.

Gloria J. Vance leaves behind a legacy of love, laughter, and kindness that will continue to inspire all those who were fortunate enough to have known her. In our hearts forevermore, may she rest in eternal peace.
