In Michigan City....officials believe there's room for growth
on the already busy south side...and the old downtown area as well.
In recent years...there's been new life in the old downtown
area....which for decades was like a ghost town.
City councilman Richard Murphy says each area of the city
serves different markets...allowing both to survive.
He says the coming back of the old downtown area
stems from a desire to go back to old days where people walked from
store to store....socializing with each other....
Murphy says the downtown area is being marketed to people who
like both the small town and big city experience...
City officials are hoping the South Shore commuter line relocates
its Michigan City tracks closer to the lakefront.....
They feel that would make the old downtown area even more
attractive to Chicago area folks who can get off the train and walk to all of
the attractions.
