steps to ease jail overcrowding

Steps have been taken to ease overcrowding at the La Porte County Jail.

Right now......authorities say there are too many offenders waiting for trial locked up

when they shouldn't be.

They're not a major threat to public safety or a risk to flee the area.

They're behind bars only because they can't afford to post bond.

$250,000 thousand dollars was approved to better screen offenders to decide

which ones should be released on their own recognizance.

La Porte Superior Court 3 Judge Jeffrey Thorne said not doing this could mean a lawsuit because counties are mandated not to hold certain offenders while they're waiting for trial.
