A La Porte County Jail officer has posted $600 bond on allegations she was driving impaired in a single vehicle accident.

Kaylee Nugent, 23, of Knox is charged with two counts of operating while intoxicated with the most serious offense being a Class A misdemeanor.

She announced plans to hire private legal counsel instead of accepting a court appointed public defender at her initial hearing Monday in La Porte Superior Court 3.

According to La Porte County Police, officers about 4:30 a.m. Saturday responded to Severs Road and 100 West just north of the La Porte city limits.

Nugent said she was the driver of a sport utility vehicle with heavy damage on the right side of the body, according to police.

Police said Nugent explained she hit a fallen tree but didn't see the tree until it was too late to avoid it.

The collision occurred after a heavy rain storm producing a lot of lightning passed through the area.

According to police, Nugent when asked if she had consumed any alcoholic beverages said she had one drink at a local bar.

Her blood alcohol level was .12-percent, police said.

Police said Nugent and a 25-year old male passenger were not injured.

La Porte County Police Capt. Derek Allen said Nugent was hired in August of 2017.

He would not say if any work related disciplinary action was taken against her.

''The sheriff's office doesn't publicly comment on personnel matters,'' Allen said.
