A longtime manufacturer in Michigan City is undertaking a close to $30 million expansion.

The decision should ease any concerns about the future of Sullair, LLC in Michigan City since the maker of air compressors founded here in 1965 was purchased by Hitachi, said Mayor Ron Meer.

The highly diversified Tokyo, Japan based conglomerate has also named Michigan City the headquarters of its air compressor related holdings in North America, said Clarence Hulse, executive director of the Economic Development Corporation Michigan City.

''This expansion clearly demonstrates their commitment to Michigan City and my administration will continue to support their growth moving forward,'' Meer said.

The expansion will add 80,000 square feet to the manufacturing facility along U.S 35 near the municipal golf course and extensive upgrades in equipment.

33 new jobs paying $1.9 million in yearly salaries are projected from the expansion.

In 2017, Hitachi purchased Sullair and its other plants in countries like China and India for $1.24 billion.

Sullair products were added to the line of air compressor products already offered by Hitachi mainly in Japan and Asia, officials said.
