A longtime public official in La Porte County has avoided prison on allegations he went inside the home of a woman without her permission.

John Sullivan must step down from the La Porte County Council and agreed to resign as a firefighter in La Porte under terms of a guilty plea to level 6 felony residential entry accepted on Thursday in La Porte Superior Court 1.

Sullivan, 59, of Wanatah will serve one-year in the La Porte County Community Corrections GPS monitoring progam.

He also has to undergo a mental health evaluation, complete and pay for any recommended treatment.

In exchange for the plea, the La Porte County Prosecutor's Office agreed not to pursue charges on other allegations of residential entry against Sullivan.

Actual sentencing was set for September 2, 2021.

Until then, Sullivan will serve the sentence under the court's pre-trial diversion progam and if he commits no violations a misdemeanor conviction will be entered on his record, according to the plea.
