La Porte County government has agreed to a $750,000 settlement with a man seriously hurt when broadsided by a snow plow truck.

The decision Wednesday by the La Porte County Commissioners came at the recommendation of its legal counsel in the case.

"We saw no success at trial," said La Porte County attorney Doug Biege.

In January of 2018, Thomas Smith, 55, was northbound on 700 West in a pick-up truck, according to La Porte County Police.

The Wanatah area man was hit on the driver's side by a westbound La Porte County Highway Department plow truck pulling out from a stop sign at 1050 South, police said.

Police said the dump truck driver, Troy Layton, told investigators he didn't see Smith who was in his blind spot.

Biege said Smith underwent several surgeries and sustained some permanent physical damage.

He said county government will pay $500,000 with the balance coming from its private insurance carrier.

Biege said part of the settlement was from the man being unable to continue providing care for his disabled wife during his recovery.
