An entire load of fertilizer spilled when a tractor trailer hauling it to a farm overturned

Wednesday morning in La Porte County.

The rollover happened before 8 a.m. at Indiana 4 and County Road 500 East near Stillwell.

The driver for Kingsbury Elevator apparently turned right onto 500 East at

too high of a speed.

The millions of tons of pot ash in the open trailer shifted causing the rig to overturn,

according to a Kingsbury Elevator official.

No injuries were reported.

LaPorte County Hazardous Materials director Jeff Hamilton said the pot ash similar to

yard fertilizer would start being cleaned up after the semi was up righted by a wrecker.

About ten gallons of hydraulic fluid leaked from the truck, he said.

500 East was blocked by the overturned truck and a portion of the load which also spilled into a grassy area beside the pavement.

''We'll help them get the fertilizer out of the yard because it's going to take awhile to get it out,'' Hamilton said.

So far, LaPorte County Police investigating the accident have not released the name of the driver and other details.
