In Michigan City.....mayor Ron Meer gained the democratic nomination last night.

The race much closer than what many people expected.

Meer received 51 percent of the vote.

Former city councilwoman Virginia Martin had 46-percent.

At first....Martin got off to a fairly sizable lead in the early voting tallies.

But...Meer from voting at the polls yesterday caught and surpassed Martin.

Meer now faces former city councilman Duane Parry.....

Parry easily gained the republican nomination over Robert Lonie.

The campaign could be a bitter one....

Parry was often a vocal critic of Meer during his time on the council.

However...Meer seems to have the advantage.

Michigan City has not had a republican mayor in about 50 years.
