Steps have been taken to reduce the cost of upgrading the Michigan City courthouse.

The original cost came in at about 24 million dollars.

Another design chosen yesterday reduces that by about two million dollars.

County commissioner Sheila Brillson Matias says the new design is not as fancy but it has

the amount of space as the one originally proposed...

It also matches the original structure....

The original did not....

The new design now has to go to the county council for its approval.

Plans call for renovating and adding onto the courthouse.

The work could begin toward the end of this year.
