Someday....perhaps soon....train whistles could be silenced in LaPorte.

Officials say four gated crossings are among the requirements the city has already

met.

An overpass on Tipton St. a couple of years from now gets the city that much closer.

Silencing the train horns is viewed as a way to improve quality of life near the

rails....

And promote new investment.

City Councilman Tim Stabosz says any request to silence trains would have to be made at the federal level to make sure it's safe the silence trains going through the city.

Mayor Mark Krentz says the city received an over six million dollar grant to build the

Tipton St. overpass.

That will take vehicles over one of the most dangerous railroad crossings in the city.

Krentz says overpass construction could begin in 2022.
