Water gushing from a broken frozen line caused Meijer in Michigan City to close Wednesday.

Michigan City Fire Chief Randy Novak said firefighters responded to the store on Franklin St. about 9 a.m.

He said the broken line was in the ceiling between two entry doors on the north entrance to the store.

''One of the sprinkler heads in the entry way froze or the pipe burst,'' said Novak.

Novak said no product was damaged but enough water came out of the pipe for water on the floor to reach the back of the store and seep into the parking lot.

A plow truck came and spread salt in the parking lot and scraped up the frozen water from the asphalt.

Novak said the store intends to reopen sometime later today.

He said it took about 10 to 15 minutes to shut off the gushing water with valves on the broken line.
